Graduate Program

The PhD program in the Department of English aims to prepare students for independent work as teachers, scholars, and critics by developing their individual abilities to pose and investigate problems in the advanced study of literatures in English and film. Each student who is admitted to the PhD program receives a five-year fellowship, which includes a tuition waiver, a generous living stipend, four summer research grants, and health insurance. The program also provides students with many different opportunities to gain teaching experience, including serving as a course assistant in a faculty-taught course, teaching a self-designed or core introductory course in the departmental undergraduate curriculum, and working as an undergraduate honors thesis supervisor. Departmental requirements are designed to lead to the doctorate in five years after the BA degree.

Thank you for your interest in the University of Chicago's PhD program in English Language and Literature. Please visit our Graduate Program pages for more comprehensive information about our PhD program. The Department of English admits students to its PhD program only, and so we recommend that students interested in master's-level work consider applying to the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH) at the University of Chicago. In this one-year program, students build their own curriculum with graduate-level courses in any humanities department (including English Language and Literature) and complete a thesis with a faculty advisor.

The PhD Application

The entire application to the PhD program must be submitted through the Humanities Division website. Materials should not be sent directly to the Department of English. Please see the Humanities Division online application for details and instructions. Further information is available in our PhD Application Checklist and FAQ.

Job Placement and Administrative Support

We have an active Job Seekers Committee, made up of faculty advisers and students, that helps PhD students put together materials for the academic job market and offers them guidance during every step of the process. We also maintain a list of recent job placements from our PhD program.

Contact Us

If you have further questions about our program, do not hesitate to contact departmental staff at englishsupport@uchicago.edu.  We would be happy to put students who have already been admitted to the PhD program in touch with current graduate students. Because we receive numerous inquiries, the Department of English faculty and staff do not often meet with prospective students in person; however, we do hold a Department Open House each year for admitted PhD students.
