Admissions

Admission is based upon grades in undergraduate English courses, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and a ten- to fifteen-page sample of critical writing. An undergraduate major in English (with a minimum of nine courses in literature) is normally required, but students who majored in other subjects will be considered for admission if they are willing to take undergraduate English courses to make up deficiencies or have completed comparable post-graduate work in English. Students may apply to receive the M.A. degree when they have successfully completed the requirements for the first year of study in the program. In special circumstances the Department may consider exceptionally well-qualified applications from those who already hold an M.A. in English or another field. In such cases, the program outlined below may be adjusted to meet the needs of the individual student. Submit the following materials:

· The Application
· GRE General Test Scores
· Official Transcripts
· 2-4 Letters of Recommendation w/recommender forms
· 10-15 page Writing Sample, exclusive of bibliography
· Statement of Academic Purpose
· TOEFL scores for foreigners from a non-English speaking nation
