I study the relationship between narrative form and social and economic history during the long eighteenth century. My book manuscript, Imaginary Wants: Avarice, Luxury, and the Rise of the Eighteenth-century Villain, is about villain characters and political economy in British fiction. I argue that eighteenth-century villains perform a distinctive narratological function in the period's fiction.
