Visiting and Revisiting

In the field of literary studies, current disciplinary formations coexist with alternative groupings that either cross subject boundaries (law and literature, science studies, visual culture) or redraw them around different objects of inquiry (race, class, gender). When we do interdisciplinary work, we bring our critical perspectives to bear on objects not conventionally our own; as a consequence we are compelled to recognize and refigure traditional paradigms from literary studies. The process of self-definition prompted by interdisciplinary visiting and disciplinary revisiting stakes a claim for literature as a special form of knowledge within the present state of disciplinary flux.

We solicit proposals that explore and perform versions of visiting and revisiting through the analysis of literary texts from every period. We particularly encourage inter- and transdisciplinary work that considers literary texts in relation to cultural-historical practices, literary-critical methods and other factors that shape the organization of disciplines.

"Visiting and Revisiting" is the first annual graduate student conference of the University of Chicago English Department. The conference is sponsored by the English Department, the Division of the Humanities, the Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Cultures Workshop, the Nicholson Center for British Studies, and the Franke Institute for the Humanities.
